Mike is an Englishman who has worked in Laos since August 1994 and lived there since February 2002. His work has been devoted to people with disability. He established the national prosthetic and orthotic service named COPE in 1997, and ten years later set up the COPE Visitor Centre which has been consistently the No.1 Trip Advisor attraction in Vientiane. Mike also set up the Lao Disabled People’s Association, and worked for over four years with the National Regulatory Authority for the Lao Unexploded Ordnance Sector. He is also a keen amateur historian of Lao PDR, especially having studied the causes of the Lao conflict.
Dr Xoukiet Panyanouvong is married to Mike and is the foremost Lao authority on human trafficking. She leads the United Nations Action for Cooperation against Trafficking in Persons (UN-ACT) in Lao PDR. Xoukiet is the eldest daughter of Pimpho Panyanouvong, who was during the revolution, aide de camp to Prince Souphanouvong, the Red Prince. She was born in a cave hospital in the Pathet Lao Headquarters in Viengxay, Houaphan province.
